Better Start

Who? What? Where and How? A Quick Overview Of The Better Start Program

Children diagnosed with cerebral palsy, sight and hearing impairments, Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome can be registered for services under for services under the Federal Government's Better Start for Children with Disability initiative from 1 July 2011.

The Better Start program includes:

Funding for early intervention services for children under six years

s5 ul bullet

Medicare items for up to four diagnostic therapy services for children under 13 years

s5 ul bullet

Medicare items for 20 therapy services for children under 15 years


The Cerebral Palsy League has been registered to provide services under Better Start, so your child can access CPL’s speech pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and psychology services under this funding.

Accessing Medicare Via Better Start


If your child is under 13 years of age and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, sight and hearing impairments, Down syndrome or fragile X syndrome, they will be eligible for Medicare Items under Better Start.

How Your Docotor Is Involved:

Visit your general practitioner to develop a treatment and management plan for your child under Medicare Item 139

Medicare items for up to four diagnostic therapy services for children under 13 years

s5 ul bullet

Medicare items for 20 therapy services for children under 15 years

 

How Your CP Allied Health Manager Is Involved:

 

You can take your letter of referral detailing your child’s treatment and management plan to your Cerebral Palsy League Allied Health Manager to access:

Four diagnostic therapy services for your child before they turn 13
s5 ul bullet Twenty therapy services for your child before they turn 15
